We asked the artist Beer (@kunstbeer) to tell us something about the making of the artwork for our cover.

What inspired you to make this artwork?

Sef and Olaf told me about their song with the concept of shame. Shame makes me feel like wanting to hide, and I thought that hiding your face in a huge party hat would be a kind of ironic hiding, calling attention to yourself whilst being anonymous.

Could you tell us something about how the artistic process went?

Of course! In collaboration, I like to work back and forth, like a conversation of inspiration. Olaf and Sef gave me a broad idea of the vibe they wanted to go with, I made a sketch, showed it to them, they told me what exactly they liked or didn’t like, I made another sketch, etcetera. I think that in collaboration, understanding each other’s concept and vibe, and then pinpointing where they overlap, is most important. That worked really well with HOWL.

Concluding, how would you describe the connection between the artwork you made and the song?

I would say that, in general, the cover of a song or album is supposed to give the first impression of what it is going to sound like, whether that is on a vinyl sleeve or on Spotify recommendations. I went for a sleek style, and retro colour scheme to represent the electronic base in the song. The vague shapes and purple mood give the overall image a kind of spiritual, intuitive vibe, which connects to Sef and Olaf’s song writing style.
